UNI Tennis goes 2-0 over the weekend

Posted:

The University of Northern Iowa Women's Tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend in Tennessee, as they knocked off both Tennessee-Martin and Murray State on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Against UTM, the Panthers made a clean sweep of doubles play as the No. 1 team of Cassandra Dix/Krissy Lankelma scored an 8-3 win over the Skyhawks tandem of Jodie Tiley/Ivan Simic, which was followed by an 8-7 tight win from Jessica Kunzelman/Nina Pfahler in No. 2 play, and an easy 8-2 win in the No. 3 match from Stefannia Sampaio/Chelsea Moore.

In singles play, Tiley earned the lone Skyhawk victory of the day in the No. 1 match, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Pfahler.

But it was smooth-sailing for the Panthers from that point on as Dix, Kunzelmann, Moore, Lankelma, and Sampaio all earned two-match victories over their Skyhawk opponents.

On Sunday, the Panthers continued their hot play with a clean 7-0 sweep of the Murray State Racers.

The No. 1 doubles team of Dix/Lankelma dispatched the top pair from MSU in Cassidy Cunitz/Ashley Canty by an 8-5 decision.

Pfahler/Kunzelmann and Sampaio/Moore easily followed that up with 8-4 and 8-1 wins over Carla Suga/Carolyn Huerth and Ashley Piersen/Jordana Klein respectively.

In singles action, Pfahler took the No. 1 match from Cunitz in a 6-2, 7-5 decision, which was followed by a Dix victory in No. 2 action over Canty by a final of 6-4, 6-2.

Kunzelmann then had to fight off Klein in No. 3 singles play in a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 battle, which clinched the team win for UNI, though their domination was far from complete.

Moore had no problem with Suga in No. 4 singles action in a 6-4, 6-1 win. But that was followed by the match of the day as Lankelma and Huerth dueled to a 6-3, 3-6 tie in the first two sets, before Lankelma eventually finished off Huerth in 14-12 overtime thriller.

In the final match of the day, Sampaio completed the sweep of the Racers with a 6-4, 7-5 win to finish off a 7-0 team victory for UNI.

The Panther Tennis team will return to the court Tuesday in a matchup with Middle Tennessee State to finish off play in Murfreesboro.
