Western Dubuque falls just short in double-OT thriller

It took longer than planned, but Mount Pleasant got the job done, squeaking by Western Dubuque 66 to 62 in double-overtime for the class 3A championship.

Jordan Ashton led the Panthers with 20 in the victory.

Mount Pleasant nearly wrapped things up in regulation with a 4 point lead in the final 2 minutes.  However, a steal and lay-in by Logan Pitz, followed by a couple free throws helped Western Dubuque force overtime.

In the OT, the Bobcats' T.J. Lake, who had been fantastic all tournament, had a chance to put things away late.  Lake, however, missed a pair of free throws with a 3 point lead and 11 seconds remaining.  Mount Pleasant's Dalton Conrad hit a three with four seconds remaining to force the second overtime.

Mount Pleasant outscored Western Dubuque 11-7 in the second overtime to win their first state title since 1918.

The Hawkeyes, representing team USA at the World University Games, got a pair of 3-run home runs out of Robert Neustrom to clinch the victory.

    The Missouri Valley Conference exercised an option to keep the men's basketball tournament in Saint Louis through at least 2020. The previous agreement ended in 2018 with a two year to remain at the Scottrade Center. The tournament, known as Arch Madness, will conduct it's 30th straight tournament in Saint Louis in 2020.
