Western Dubuque falls just short in double-OT thriller

Posted:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -

It took longer than planned, but Mount Pleasant got the job done, squeaking by Western Dubuque 66 to 62 in double-overtime for the class 3A championship.

Jordan Ashton led the Panthers with 20 in the victory.

Mount Pleasant nearly wrapped things up in regulation with a 4 point lead in the final 2 minutes.  However, a steal and lay-in by Logan Pitz, followed by a couple free throws helped Western Dubuque force overtime.

In the OT, the Bobcats' T.J. Lake, who had been fantastic all tournament, had a chance to put things away late.  Lake, however, missed a pair of free throws with a 3 point lead and 11 seconds remaining.  Mount Pleasant's Dalton Conrad hit a three with four seconds remaining to force the second overtime.

Mount Pleasant outscored Western Dubuque 11-7 in the second overtime to win their first state title since 1918.
