Set your clocks & check your smoke detector

Sunday marks the start of Daylight Saving Time, and firefighters are reminding you to check your smoke detectors as you turn forward your clocks.

"It's been proven. Time and time again, studies have shown that smoke detectors save lives," said Waterloo firefighter Nick Anderson.

The National Fire Protection Agency estimates two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes that either did not have smoke detectors, or the alarm was not working. Waterloo Fire Rescue recommends you test smoke detectors weekly. Then twice a year, when you're setting your clocks, change out the battery.

You should also take a look the age of your detector -- it might be time to replace it.

"If it's more than ten years old, it should be replaced. Regardless of fresh batteries or not. Couple of other things to remember -- it says do not paint, never paint over these. Don't pull them down, don't take them apart," said Anderson.

Waterloo Fire Rescue has one more recommendation: After testing the new battery, practice your household emergency exit plan.
