Buchanan County family needs your help to get a new home

Sue Spece has three adult children: Josh, Jackie and Jacob.

She runs a nursery business, In the Country Garden and Gifts, with her oldest son, Josh. All the Spece children have a genetic form of muscular dystrophy.

"Spinal muscular atrophy. The neurons at the bottom of the spine don't tell the muscles to work," said Sue Spece.

The Spece family was nominated by friends for the show Extreme Home Makeover but didn't get picked. Instead, family, friends and community members are stepping up to help build the Spece family a dream home in the country.

The goal is for the house to go next to the greenhouse in Buchanan County so it's easier for Josh to get to work. Besides more space, the house will have a suspended lift system so Sue doesn't have to lift her children anymore and a voice activated electrical system.

"The kids can tell the lights to turn on, the TV, open a door, which now somebody has to be there all the time," said Spece.

Sue Spece said she wants to be able to take care of her children as long as she's physically able... and a new house can help her do that.

Community members have already organized several fundraisers to reach the $200,000 dollar goal.

"Thank you. I don't know how to ever thank them enough for what they've done," said Spece.

So far, about one-fifth of the total is raised. Sue is confident that thanks to community support, she and her family will get their dream home in the country.

An account for the family is set up at Iowa Bank. For more information, click here.
