UPDATE: More than 50 snakes returned to Waterloo owner

According to the Cedar Bend Humane Society, 53 snakes and 1 lizard were taken from a home in Waterloo Friday afternoon.

The Humane Society says the reptiles were examined, determined to be in good shape and returned to their owners.

The people who live in the 200 block of East 9th Street owned numerous snakes including corn snakes, milk snakes and pythons.

Maria Tiller, a Waterloo code enforcement officer said four of the snakes taken from the home are illegal to own in Waterloo.  There were three boa constrictors, and one python.

Tiller took part in Friday's seizure, and said other snakes were organized and labeled, identifying the reptiles' species.

"You don't have that abundance of snakes or reptiles and not be running a home occupation," Tiller said.

The owners of the reptiles were cited for the unlicensed home selling of snakes.
If found guilty in court, the owner would pay a $200 fine.

Tiller says the snakes were very well taken care of.
