Text an anonymous tip in Linn County

Fighting crime is advancing with communication technology.

Now - instead of calling in anonymously - you can "Text a Tip".

Right now this only works in Linn County.

If you witness a crime or have any information - you can send a text message to "crimes" or 274637.

Then in the message, type "5227" followed by your tip.
For example:  "5227 John Doe is breaking into the box factory."

Authorities want people to commit this to memory:  "Crimes 5227".

There are more detailed instructions on any Linn County law enforcement website.

Since more people text, especially younger people -- it's hoped their anonymous tips can lead to more arrests in unsolved crimes.
Your information could get your a reward, just like if you call Crime Stoppers.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, of the Cedar Rapids Police Department said, "They'll be given a code, just like our Crime Stoppers hotline... and it's a code that's only their code alone. They're going to be the only ones that know it, and of course law enforcement. So if their information leads to an arrest, then they would be eligible for a reward."
