Iowa City makes Washington Street two-way

For the first time since the 1970s, Washington Street in Iowa City will become a two-way street starting next week.

County leaders said cyclists have complained about the one way.
The metropolitan planning organization of Johnson County decided a two-way street would create a positive impact on a street that isn't getting used as much anymore.
"It will be easier for everybody to circulate through downtown, easier for out-of-town visitors to make their way through downtown, easier for bicyclists," John Yapp, Johnson County Transportation planner, said.
DDowntown businesses said they are happy with the change.
They said they believe it will help attract the community and out-of-town visitors.
Meanwhile, leaders hope the two way street will make it easier to respond to emergency calls.
