Dozens in Black Hawk County become certified storm spotters

BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

More than 70 people took a class to be certified as storm spotters Monday.

"When severe weather happens, they're our eyes in the field, which helps not only verify some of the things that we're seeing back at the office on radar, but it gives a heads up for, any times, for folks who work near communities that are a little bit further from our office," Roger Vachalek with the National Weather Service said.

The national weather service sends meteorologists to almost every county in Iowa to train people how to identify potentially deadly weather patterns.

There are more than a thousand certified spotters in central Iowa alone.
