U of I hires Davis as offensive coordinator

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A potential for a possible job with the Miami Dolphins lead former Texas Longhorn's Coach Greg Davis to the University of Iowa.

Monday afternoon, Davis said a conversation with current Miami Head Coach and former Hawkeye assistant Joe Philbin started the ball rolling with Iowa.

"Joe and I go back a long, long way, and he came to Texas, clinic‑ed us a couple times.  I went to Harvard and put a clinic on for them," Davis said.

Right before Davis got the Hawkeye job, Philbin gave him a little bit of hope about the Dolphins job.

"[He] said, 'Just want you to know, you're on my short list, but you also understand there's people I've worked with [for] years,'" Davis said.

Philbin called Davis back a couple of days later and said he hired Ken O'Keefe.

"I said, 'That's great.  Since you've done that, how about calling Kirk for me," Davis said.

About that same time, Davis said he sent Iowa's football coach Kirk Ferentz a text that said 'Hey, if this rumor is true, I would love to have the opportunity to visit with you.'

They visited and on Monday, Davis was hired.
