Branstad asks lawmakers to approve education overhaul

Dozens of people including Iowa Governor Terry Branstad spoke up at Monday's public hearing at the statehouse in Des Moines.

Branstad says Iowa has been slipping in rankings since the 1990's. Monday he asked lawmaker to approve his proposed overhaul of Iowa's elementary and secondary schools.

"I'm counting on you to be bold, not timid," Branstad said. "I'm counting on you to provide comprehensive education reform this session."

A house committee has approved a modified version of that plan, but more change is likely.

Despite general support for much of the plan, some legislators have objected to specifics, such as not promoting third graders who don't demonstrate reading proficiency and forcing 11th graders to take college entrance exams.
