Governor Branstad backs UNI president

Governor Branstad is backing UNI President Ben Allen.

In a news conference Monday, Branstad said, "I believe the president of UNI is in the best position to articulate a vision for the future of the university and make the tough decisions necessary to focus on its strengths and on the things that are critical to provide the best quality educational opportunities for Iowa's students. I believe Ben Allen is doing that.  I believe he deserves our respect and support during this time in which he's making tough decisions that I think will make a big difference in the quality of education at the University of Northern Iowa."

UNI Student Body President Spencer Walrath echoes that support.

"I think this serves as an opportunity to improve UNI's teacher education program.  That way we can start investing in new opportunities that are realistic in what teachers face when they go out in the real world," said Walrath.

Walrath also cited the 53 UNI faculty members who backed Ben Allen in a confidence vote held on campus Friday.

197 faculty members cast ballots of no confidence.
