BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

Some residents in rural Black Hawk County were evacuated Monday morning after a gas leak.

It happened just before 6:30 a.m. in the 7100 block of Jesup Road. On arrival, crews determined a regulator malfunctioned on a natural gas line.

Officials say the release was significant, and cause a low lying cloud in the area covering almost a square mile. Residents in the area were notified, and evacuated. Roads were blocked off within a two-mile area.

Mid-American Energy and Northern Natural Gas Company were called to the scene, and the leak was fixed. Officials say the gas cloud was slow to dissipate because of the cold air an lack of winds.

Once the threat was over, roads were opened up and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
