12 cocker spaniels from alleged Iowa puppy mill adopted

Some rescued dogs have new homes after a special adoption event in Cedar Rapids.

12 cocker spaniels at the Cedar Valley Humane Society went home with new owners Saturday night.

The dogs were rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Sac County earlier this year.

After getting vet care and grooming for the last few weeks, the dogs were adopted by local families.

Several dozen people were given up to 12 tickets and had to fill out a ticket for each dog they might be interested in.

Three names were then picked out of a jar for each dog, and the first name called had the first shot of taking home that particular cocker spaniel.

"I have seen more support here, and I have worked in many parts of this country. But the support from this area of people has been the best I have ever worked with since 2000, since I got in this field. So the community is wonderful," said executive director Bob Citrullo.

Volunteers have worked with the dogs and provided care in terms of medical needs and socialization skills.

The shelter still has three more dogs that might be able to be adopted at a later date.
