UNI students teach kids how math can be fun

A group of UNI students gathered Saturday to show kids that math can be fun. The students are part of an on-campus organization called TEAM.  Teaching Educators About Math is for education majors, and the group hosts several fundraisers throughout the year to fund this annual math fair.

Brianne Schmitt, a UNI student and TEAM member, said, "For kids to see that math is fun at a younger age helps them continue liking math as they get older. Because at middle school age they start to be like 'oh, math is horrible, I don't want to do math'. So getting them to like math at a younger age helps them to enjoy it at the older age."

More than 50 4th, 5th and 6th graders got the opportunity to learn more about math from the teachers-to-be. The free event gave kids a chance to play games related to math and counting, and gave UNI students a chance to reach out to kids. The math fair is in its 6th year.
