New Hampton students raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Students at St. Joseph School in New Hampton just wrapped up a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

For three weeks, the 162 students collected loose change for "Pennies for Patients."

"They would go home and grab change off the counter, and one of the rules was they had to ask their parents," said student Anna Zwanziger.

The fundraiser came across Jennifer Knutson's desk, and it caught her eye because two years ago her sister was diagnosed with a blood cancer. The students embraced the first-time fundraiser.

"We've had a tremendous goal from the students. Our initial goal was $1,000 and they blew that out of the water," said Jennifer Knutson. At an assembly, the students found out just how much money they raised: $4,199.15.

"I think it's unbelievable how much they brought in," said Zwanziger.

The students learned a small amount can make a big difference in the end.

"Every penny does count," said Knutson.

All the money goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for patient aid and to fund research.
