Waterloo man convicted of selling pot near a school and intimidating witnesses

A Waterloo man has been convicted of having a gun as a felon, selling marijuana near a school and intimidating witnesses prior to his trial.

Quintel Phillips, 26, was convicted by a jury on Wednesday following a three-day trial in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

The evidence presented at trial showed that Phillips sold marijuana to an informant while in possession of a handgun.  A search of his home turned up more marijuana, cash and a handgun with a scratched-off serial number.

Court documents show that while Phillips was awaiting trial, he had someone call the informant and pass along a threatening message.  They also say that Phillips made several calls from the Linn County Jail to another witness saying that he knew where he lived and he was going to kill him.

A sentencing date has not been set, but Phillips faces five years to life in prison and a $1,000,000 fine.
