Door bell saves Cedar Rapids woman from fire

A door bell saved a Cedar Rapids woman from a fire at her house Thursday.

It happened at 6000 Sharon Lane NW.

Mary Frank, 53, was on the phone with a friend when her door bell wouldn't stop ringing.  She checked her front and back doors, but no one was there.

After starting to smell smoke and seeing wisps of it, she left her home and called the fire department.

Cedar Rapids fire crews said the fire was coming from a garage door button that was installed by the front door, but the exact cause of the fire is unknown.

They found smoldering fire between the studs but no active flames. Damage did not extend past the front door area.

The electric power was cut off from the house for safety. There was also some light smoke damage. Red Cross assisted with temporary housing.
