Electric rates are increasing

For the first time in 16 years, Iowa will see an increase in electric rates.

Cedar Valley residents took part in a meeting to discuss these rate increases from MidAmerican energy.

The Iowa Utilities Board is seeking a three to five percent increase in rates beginning March 2nd.

This increase would average to $2.33 per household.

The board is also considering increasing rates an additional $1.20 in 2013.

Thursday's meeting in Waterloo gave the public a chance to ask questions of the increase proposal and to voice concerns.

"I'm upset a lot, because there's gas prices going up, the property taxes are going up, everything is going up," Waterloo resident Cheryl Christainsen, Waterloo said. "Your expenses are higher and there's less money coming in to take care of all of these. It's gotta' stop some place soon."

The Iowa Utilities Board will take comments from the public into consideration as the rate increases are finalized.

Comments will be written down at meetings as well as taken from forms on the board website.

The final decision deadline for the proposed increases is December 21st.
