$70 million expansion at Deere & Co. planned

A $70 million expansion is in the works for Deere & Company in Waterloo.

The company announced Thursday it will expand its manufacturing capacity by 10 percent.
The upgrade should be complete by the middle of next year.

Deere has been reporting strong demand for tractors.

The new expansion will employ 6,000 people, but is not expected to add manufacturing jobs.

Meanwhile, Tyson Foods is upgrading a beef plant in northeast Nebraska, but the changes could lead to the closing of a smaller beef plant in Iowa.

200 production jobs will be added to the larger facility in Dakota City, Nebraska. Tyson says that means the plant won't need animals from the Iowa plant in Denison, just 60 miles away. 400 people work at the Denison plant.
