House Democrats walk out over gun rights legislation

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Democrats in the Iowa Statehouse have walked out on talks over two gun rights bills.

The House was scheduled to debate HF 2361 and HJR 2009 Wednesday morning. HF 2361 would allow a person to use deadly force to protect themselves. HJR 2009 calls for adding gun rights protections to the Iowa Constitution.

Democrats called for a break to hold a closed door caucus when the session was convened, but they quickly left the building.

Democratic leaders in the house say they took the action because Republicans did not inform them that the bills would be debated.  Republican leaders say Democrats were informed of the planned debate.

Republicans hold a 20 seat majority in the house.
