Girls State Basketball: Wahlert and Bellevue come up short

Riding a perfect 25-0 record, the Bellevue Comets looked to make the most of their first ever trip to state, taking on 3rd ranked IKM-Manning in the first round.

The Comets Kelsey Ernst led the way with 19, giving Bellevue an early 2 point edge.

Just before half, Lynsie Sieversen hits the J. The Comets would lead 31-29 at the halftime break, but IKM came alive in the second.

Liz Halbur gets the inside 2, part of an 8-0 run, and they'd finish it out as freshman Megan Muhlbaurer rains in the 3.

Bellevue falls in their tourney debut: 71 to 55.

"We had 3 goals: to be conference champs, undefeated, and to make it to state, and I couldn't be anymore proud of how far we got this year," Bellevue Junior Kelsey Ernst said.

In class 3-A, Dubuque Wahlert had their sights set on advancing past number 3 Sioux City Heelan, and the golden eagles got off to a great start.  Tessa Leyton hits from downtown for a quick 4 point edge.

Later, it's Ana Schmitt from beyond the arc, Wahlert led by 10 after the first quarter, but Heelan would storm back. Madison Yohe gets the bucket and the foul. They'd pull even at the half, and they'd take over down the stretch. MaKayla Augustine hits the 3; Heelan rolls 77 to 60.

"Our kids battled. Our kids battled, and Heelan's a nice team, we know that, but I'm really proud of our seniors," Dubuque Wahlert head coach Kris Spiegler said.
