CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Valley Humane Society will hold a special adoption event for 12 of the dogs that were rescued from a Sac County farm in January.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society in Cedar Rapids took in 15 of the 87 dogs that were removed from the property owned by Mary Broderson on January 25.  4-by-4 wire cages were kept in a wooden shack with up to five dogs in each cage.  The cages were stacked on top of each other with their waste falling on the dogs below.

Broderson has pleaded not guilty.  She faces a maximum of 12 years in prison and a $64,000 fine if convicted on all charges.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society will hold the adoption event on Saturday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m.  They are located at 7411 Mount Vernon Road SE in Cedar Rapids.

Anyone wishing to adopt one of these dogs must attend the event.  Each interested household will be given up to 12 tickets to be put in a jar corresponding to each dog.  Each household may only place one ticket in each jar.

After the tickets are placed, three tickets will be drawn from each jar.  The people who placed those tickets in the jar will be asked to fill out an application.

The application from the first party drawn from each jar will be evaluated.  If that application is approved, the dog will go home with that person.  If that application is not approved, the second application will be evaluated, and so on.

"Our plan is to send the dogs home with their new forever families that night," Bob Citrullo, Executive Director of the Cedar Valley Humane Society, said in a written statement. "So we need to make sure that everyone interested in adopting one of these dogs is prepared for that possibility."

A care package consisting of a collar, leash, dog food, dog toy, and blanket will be sent home with each cocker spaniel.

If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs, you must bring the following:

- a copy of your lease if you are a renter
- a copy of the veterinary records for every animal in your home. All animals currently in their home must be up-to-date on their vaccinations or the adoption application will be denied.
- if there are other dogs present in the home, you must bring the dogs to the adoption event so the cocker spaniel can meet those dogs in the presence of the Cedar Valley Humane Society staff. If the staff behaviorist decides that the dogs' behavior indicates compatibility issues, then the application will be denied and the next in line will be considered.

You can complete an application in advance and bring it to the event. No applications will be accepted prior to the event. Applications are available at www.cvhumane.org

The dogs will be moved into the adoption area on Wednesday.  If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs, you are encouraged to visit them during regular business hours.

For more information, visit www.cvhumane.org or call (319) 362-6288.

13 animals were taken to Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo.
Staff members there say some of those animals have already been adopted, and others are out on the adoption floor.
