Cedar Falls rallies support for Blue Zones Project

Cedar Falls could be one step closer to becoming a Blue Zones Community.

Those living in Cedar Falls held a rally at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday in the Cedar Falls Library parking lot to get people excited about the Blue Zones Project.

Fifteen people from the Blue Zones Evaluation Team were at the rally showing what it means to be a demonstration community.

Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids are among 11 finalists for this.

If Cedar Falls does become a Blue Zones Community, it means the city would get funding and efforts to help make the community healthier.

Organizers' goal is to make Iowa the healthiest state in the country by 2016.

According to one report, it seems to be working. The Gallup-Healthways Well-being Index ranked Iowa the 16th healthiest state in 2011. Iowa was ranked 19th in 2010.

The ranking is based on six sub- categories, including physical health and work environment. In the healthy behavior category, Iowa ranks 36th, but when it comes to emotional health and basic access, Iowa is in the top 10 in the nation.
