DHS talks cutting 400 jobs unless state shows it the money

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The Department of Human Services is warning that layoffs and other cuts could be on the horizon if the Iowa statehouse budget is approved.

Monday afternoon members of a House committee debated spending plans for the agency for the coming year.

The cost of DHS has been growing.

While Democrats say that because DHS needs more money to serve Iowa, Republicans say they are already giving tens of millions of dollars to the agency.

Republicans say their budget target numbers are just the beginning of negotiations.

House Republicans say DHS would still get $70 million more than the current year's budget, but that's only roughly half the increase DHS says it needs.

DHS claims if it doesn't get the increased funding it wants, it could lay off 400 employees and cut back on services for children and families.
