DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

More than three dozen eastern Iowa Boy Scouts received the organization's highest honor Sunday afternoon.

The Boy Scouts of America Northeast Iowa Council held its 28th annual Eagle Scout brunch, where 39 Boy Scouts got the award.

In order to earn the Eagle Scout Award, a scout must earn 21 merit badges, take leadership roles and complete other requirements before turning 18 years old.

Nationwide, only about two percent of boys who start scouting end up Eagle Scouts.

Wallace Brown was the event's emcee and is executive board member with the Northeast Iowa Council.

"This is a great thing for the young men, and they will go on to be, probably, the leaders of the community and leaders of the state and leaders of the nation," he said at the event.

This is the 100th year of the Eagle Scout program. Since 1912, more than two million Boy Scouts have become Eagle Scouts.
