UPDATE: One person dead after Cedar Rapids house fire

Fire crews have released the name of the victim of a fatal fire Sunday morning in Cedar Rapids.

The man is identified as 43-year-old Kerry Bye.

Fire crews were called to Bye's house at 215 22nd Street Northwest around 5:45 a.m.

They say two newspaper carriers saw heavy smoke coming from the roof of the house and called the fire department for help.

When fire crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from a side window of the home. As crews worked through thick smoke to put out the fire, another crew arrived to look for people in the home.

Bye was found in a back bedroom.  Firefighter paramedics tried to revive Bye as soon as he was removed from the home but their efforts were unsuccessful.   An autopsy will be performed by the Medical Examiner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  Fire crews say there were no working smoke alarms in the home.

The last fire death in Cedar Rapids occurred Oct. 7, 2010.
