Warriors defeat Lincoln in tournament quarterfinals

AMES (KWWL) -

The Waterloo Warriors  came into this tournament at 31-1, but that didn't matter as they considered this to be a new season.  That new season started out strong as the Warriors defeated Lincoln 5-3 in the MHSHL quarterfinals.

Just 31 seconds in to the game Tim Brown would light the lamp for the 19th time this season giving Waterloo the early edge, but Lincoln would put up a fight.  John Clark scored soon after knotting it at one apiece.

That's when the Warriors took over.  On a 2 on 1 break, Connor Hyde found Jake Lichty for a pretty goal to make it 2-1 Waterloo.  They'd add to it just before the break, Sean Cavanaugh's shot would get deflected in to the net by David Becker.  The Warriors would lead 3-1 at the end of the first period.

Early in the second they'd extend the lead.  Connor Hyde knocked in a rebound, for a 4-1 advantage.

Lincoln cut it to 4-3 in the third, but Becker put it out of the reach with his second goal of the night as Waterloo advanced.

"I think they thought it was going to be a really easy contest for them," said Warrior head coach Doug Dietz, "and Lincoln played well against us.  We need to learn to just play simple, and that's the theme right now, just making simple plays."

"Our team played pretty well  The last 2 periods we kind of let up, but that will happen to any good team once you get up big," added Becker after his 2 goal night, "We've just got to keep focused for tomorrow, and we're going to get the job done."

Waterloo will face the Des Moines Oak Leafs in Saturday's semifinals.
