Marion to discuss waste-to-energy project on Monday

The Marion City Council will meet again on Monday to discuss a project that would turn garbage into energy.

The council tabled the issue Thursday night after meeting for about two hours, but Mayor Snooks Buska says there is a timeline involved, so they need to discuss it again on Monday night.

The issue was tabled because council members had some things with the contract that they feel needed to be addressed.

Plasma Power, LLC, a Florida-based company, wants the city to provide 250 tons of garbage a day.  The garbage would be converted into a gas through a plasma-arc process.  The gas would then fuel boilers.

The hope is that the city could then stop sending garbage to the landfill.

The company hopes to have a contract soon so they can have some kind of operations running by the end of the year.

The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday.  According to the meeting notice, they will vote to adjourn to an executive session.
