Police warn of recent "IRS" scams

Police are warning of several recent scams targeting eastern Iowans. Two such scams claim to involve the Internal Revenue Service.

In one telephone scam, the caller claims to be from the IRS and asks for personal information. Dubuque police say an actual IRS agent would already have that information and would not call to get it. If in doubt about a call, contact your tax preparer or call the IRS directly.

Another scam comes from an email that claims to be from the IRS. The email says a person's tax return has been placed on hold, and asks you to click on a link to release it. The link then infects the computer with a virus, or sends the user to a fraudulent website that asks for personal information. The IRS does not contact people in this way. If you have questions about your return, you should contact the IRS directly on their website
