UNI Softball wins first game of Memphis Invitational

The University of Northern Iowa Women's Softball team knocked off last year's MVC Tournament champion Missouri State in the Panthers' first match of the Memphis Tiger Invitational.

The Panthers got strong performances at the plate from Seniors Courtney Dunker and Mackenzie Daigh, who both tallied their first home runs of the season, while Daigh hit safely for the sixth consecutive game.

Junior College transfer Melissa Walls got the ball rolling early for UNI with an RBI single into centerfield, which plated Daigh for the first run of the game.

Two batters later, Dunker brought home Walls on a two-run blast over the wall, the 25th home run of her career.

Sensational Sophomore Pitcher Jamie Fisher, looking for her fourth win on the early season, allowed the Lady Bears to cut into the Panther lead in the third inning when Ashley Brentz plated Lauren Eisenreich on an RBI single.

UNI added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth inning when Daigh went yard, scoring Junior Samantha Reimer from first, giving UNI a 5-1 lead.

Missouri State cut into the Panther lead in the sixth inning after a two-run home run from Caitlin Chapin, but Fisher shut down the Bears' rally, and capped off her fourth game of the season with a 5-3 victory, tallying seven strikeouts, five hits, and three earned runs in the complete game win.
