67-year old man sentenced to 24 years for Cedar Rapids bank robbery

The 67-year old man who pleaded guilty last year to robbing a downtown Cedar Rapids bank in June, has been sentenced to 24 years in federal prison.

Robert Michael Rutan, 67, from Cedar Rapids, pleaded guilty on September 29 to one count of bank robbery.  He admitted to robbing the downtown branch of Hills Bank and Trust Company on June 3, 2011 by giving a note to a teller threatening violence if he was not given the money. Rutan was arrested on June 20, 2011, in Overland, Missouri.

According to court records, Rutan was convicted on three counts of first degree robbery with a dangerous weapon in 1968 and second degree murder in 1972, and again in 1974.

Rutan was sentenced to 20 years in prison on the bank robbery charge and four years for violating his terms of supervised release.  There is no parole in the federal system.
