State legislators respond to UNI budget issues

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

State legislators are getting involved in the discussion involving UNI's budget plans for the near future.

University President Ben Allen released a list of recommended budget cuts and closure this week including closing Price Lab School, the University Museum, UNI Printing Services and cutting $500,000 to the athletic department.

Cedar Falls Senator Jeff Danielson will host a community conversation Sunday afternoon.  It will happen at the Cedar Falls Community Center, 528 Main Street, this Sunday, at 4 p.m.

The meeting is open to everyone. If you are unable to attend, you can email your thoughts to jeffdanielson@gmail.com.

Iowa House Speaker Kraig Paulsen from Hiawatha says he agrees with Allen's budget cuts and proposed closures.

"I want to commend and support President Allen on his recent budget decisions he is making for the University of Northern Iowa. I believe President Allen is committed to doing what is in the best interest of the university and his actions will allow UNI to be better poised for future growth," Paulsen said.

The proposed plans must be approved by the Board of Regents and Iowa Legislature.
