ISU students plan to protest coal plant

A group of Iowa State University students are planning to promote clean energy use on campus. The student group, ActivUs, wants to encourage university leaders to retire its coal plant and replace with renewable energies.

The rally is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Thursday. The rally will include speeches by the executive assistant to ISU's president, the executive director of the Iowa Wind Energy Association and a former national president of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

ActivUs has protested the coal plant for two years. Wednesday the group put out models of wind turbines and piles of coal to kick off the protest. The students are collecting petitions and will deliver them to ISU's new president, Steven Leath.
