VINTON (KWWL) -

Vinton Police say a reported gunshot wound was self-inflicted Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to 300 S. Q. Avenue in Vinton around 1:13 p.m. after reports of a possible shooting.

Emergency crews transported a woman with a gunshot wound to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton and she was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Police did not release her condition.

The woman told police she was shot while someone tried to break into her home. Police say the firearm used was owned by another person living in the house and the gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted. Police say there is no evidence of forced entry into the home, and there is no reason to believe the public is in any danger.

According to police, the only other person at home was the woman's one-year-old son. The woman had placed him in a car seat inside a car parked in the driveway prior to the incident. Police took the child and have made a referral to the Department of Human Services.

Police continue to investigate but say they don't anticipate filing any criminal charges.
