DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Iowa lawmakers said they have struck a deal to increase this year's spending on the state's prison system to avoid layoffs of guards.

The agreement called for spending $7.5 million extra on prisons. This splits the difference between what was approved in the House and Senate. The House had approve $6.5 million in spending and $8.5 million was approved by the Senate.

Lawmakers said the Corrections Department needs the extra money due to a contract with state worker unions approved by former Governor. Chet Culver that pushed up expenses.

Urbandale Republican Rep. Scott Raecker said he believes this provides hope the House and Senate can come to an agreement on other budget matters.
