Waterloo floral shop closing after 90 years of business

A business growing memories for nearly a century is closing shop. The owners of Rainbow Florists and Greenhouses in Waterloo have been growing and delivering flowers for 90 years.

Owner Rich Frink says the decision to sell the business and property wasn't easy as Frink is the third generation of his family to run the business.

"Somebody asked me how long you've been doing this, I said they started bringing me down here when I was two," said Frink.

As the options have blossomed for florists, so has the competition.  But this local shop has always had loyal customers.

"We have very loyal customers. That's probably one of the biggest things I'm going to miss is not only are they customers, they're friends," said Frink.

This business has seen a lot of changes on the past 90 years since it opened it's doors for the first time. It started out in a very rural part of Waterloo when it opened and the city grew around it. In 1988 Highway 218 was built and they moved the building a couple hundred yards to its present location. Things have only gotten busier.

The flooding in 2008 was the final straw for this business as a portion of the greenhouses was destroyed. It would cost too much in time and money to have them rebuilt.

"People ask why are we getting out. It's time for a new chapter in our lives," said Frink.

Frink is selling his property to a nearby business called American Pattern and CNC Works. Frink says he is planning to close the business for good on February 29th.
