Cedar Rapids changes glass recycling policies

Some immediate changes are coming to the way glass will be collected and recycled in Cedar Rapids.

The Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency has partnered with the Kansas City-based company Ripple Glass to allow clear and colored glass to be collected together.

Before this change, Cedar Rapids residents were required to put clear glass in one curbside container and colored glass in another.

Ripple Glass constructed a new facility that allows machines to separate colored and clear glass, even after it's broken. Because of the new arrangement, the Solid Waste Agency will save about $12,000 annually in processing costs.

Now, customers can set out one curbside container with both clear and colored glass. Glass must not be placed in the CURBY cart.

Those without curbside service can drop off glass and other recyclable materials at 1954 County Home Road and 2250 A Street SW.
