Senate panel votes to legalize Internet poker in Iowa

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

A Senate panel voted to approve a measure legalizing Internet poker in Iowa.

The measure was approved by a three-member panel of the Senate State Government Committee on Monday and debate by the full committee is expected later this week.

The measure would allow state casinos and racetracks to offer Internet poker. It would be regulated by the state gaming commission.

Supporters of the bill say residents already gamble online and this would allow the state to generate revenue and regulate the gambling.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission has issued a study outlining how the state could structure Internet poker, putting projected revenue between $3 million and $13 million.
