Funeral services for Waterloo boy battling cancer

Family and friends gathered at a funeral Monday for a Waterloo boy who lost his battle with an inoperable brain tumor.

10-year-old Oliver Palmer died at a hospice near his home early Thursday morning. Monday he was remembered in a service at the Church of Jesus Christ in Cedar Falls.

Oliver was well-known around the Cedar Valley because of a number of benefits held by friends and family. Oliver was diagnosed just before Christmas in 2009, exactly one year later 50 people including Santa and the Waterloo Fire Department showed up outside his house to sing Christmas carols. Oliver was also a Kid Captain at an Iowa Hawkeyes game in 2011. Last year, on his birthday, Oliver received more than 800 cards from across the area.

Now friends are organizing one more campaign for the family in Oliver's honor. You can send Postcards of Peace to: Peace to the Palmer Family, 417 Oaklawn Avenue, Waterloo, IA 50701.
