Rockwell Collins served big role in first American orbit

On this day in 1962, John Glenn became the first American to launch into orbit.

Glenn orbited the earth three times.

Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids provided all the avionics for the mission, Friendship 7.

Ohio State University will honor John Glenn this evening during a celebration dinner.

Proceeds will benefit faculty, students and programs related to science and technology research at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and the College of Engineering at the Ohio State University.

Astronaut Mark Kelly, who commanded the final mission of space shuttle endeavor, will speak at the event.
