A new study shows Iowa's lakes are dirtier than ever before.

An Iowa State University scientist took samples from lakes.  Scientist John Downing's study found 88 percent of the lakes sampled had increased phosphorus levels.

Phosphorus is found in crop and lawn fertilizers.  It can cause algae blooms, which can kill fish and create bacteria.
