A new wind turbine at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids is now generating electricity.

It took more than a month to build the turbine at a cost of $5.2 million.

Electricity generated by the turbine will be sold to Alliant Energy. Kirkwood estimates it will make about $300,000 per year.

Students in the Energy Production and Distribution Technologies program will use the turbine as a working lab, assisting with maintenance every six months and observing repairs.
