Voters have chance to weigh in on local option sales tax

Voters in Cedar Rapids will have a chance to weigh in on a local option sales tax.

The tax extension was turned down in 2010, but city leaders say it is crucial in providing a flood protection system for both sides of the river.

Some, like Lisa Kuzela, wonder if the city has done all they can to find money for flood protection.

Kuzela thinks city leaders should lobby congress directly for help to construct levees and walls on the river's west side.

The Army Corps of Engineers says the west side system doesn't pass a cost-benefit analysis.

Mayor Ron Corbett says the city will continue to lobby for federal help.

"As everyone knows the federal government is in a very tight situation as far as money and what they will and will not approve is really anyone's guess at this point in time, but we're going to continue to push," Corbett said.

Congress has approved funding for protection on the city's east side.

Federal funds will pay for 65 percent of the project.
