A Waterloo man is charged with child endangerment after police say he caused an infant to receive burns to over 30% of her body.

Cedar Falls officers were called to Sartori Hospital on January 17 after the girl was brought in with burns from a hot liquid.  She was flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics a short time later.

Officers spoke to Martavis Lee Smith, 19, of Waterloo, who they say was caring for the girl at the time of her injuries.  They say Smith gave differing stories before admitting that he poured water over the girl's head while giving her a bath, but did not check the temperature of the water.

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson says the incident happened at 1813 W. 8th Street in Cedar Falls.

Police say Smith told them the injuries happened mid to late morning, but the child was not taken to the hospital until the mother returned home in the early afternoon.

Police say the girl was burned over 32% of her body including her head, ears, neck, shoulders, chest, back and face.  She is expected to recover without any scarring.  She is also expected to re-grow her hair.
