DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said his trip to Iowa symbolizes the close ties between China and the United States.

At Wednesday night's state dinner, Xi and Gov. Terry Branstad talked of the warm relationship between Iowa and China.

About 750 people attended the dinner, which featured a "Taste of Iowa" menu including bacon wrapped pork tenderloin and beef tenderloin.

Xi reminisced of his visit to Muscatine in 1985. He recalled the beauty of the Mississippi River, but also the hospitality.

"I came away from that visit very impressed from my encounters with the people of Iowa. That the people of the United States, like the people of China, are honest, warm-hearted, hard working and friendly people," Xi said. "There is a tremendous reservoir of goodwill between the American and Chinese and we each take great interest in the other."

Xi also said during his toast that Iowa stands at the forefront of cooperation between China and the U.S. Branstad praised the trading partnerships with China and Iowa farmers.

Xi will attend an agricultural conference in Iowa on Thursday and also meet with a farmer before heading to Los Angeles.
