More than 1,200 attend free Valentine's for Veterans concert

Country music star Lorrie Morgan, the Iowa City Veteran's Affairs Health Services Center and Help Hospitalized Veterans showcased their love and appreciation for the nation's bravest Tuesday night.

Morgan performed a free Valentine's for Veterans concert at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. Thanks to support from several generous sponsors, all the veterans and their families attended at no cost, but as one person eloquently put it, they've already paid the price.

As folks walked in they were greeted with a red carnation, a flag, and a valentine from a local child. The veterans said they were grateful to be spending Valentine's Day together with the ones they love and their former brothers and sisters in arms. The Iowa City VA depended on hundreds of volunteers to make the evening go off without a hitch.

"We appreciate when they take care of us veterans. They do a heck of a good job," Ron Geiger, a retired U.S. Air Force member, said.

"I think its a great idea, maybe it will attract some people who will realize what kind of medical center we have that they weren't aware of previously in our area," American Legionnaire Gary Golson said.

The Iowa City VA is hoping to make this an annual concert. Everyone who attended, including Morgan, said it was a wonderful way to spend Valentine's Day.
