CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

One of the dogs rescued from an alleged rural Sac County puppy mill has given birth to six puppies at Kirkwood Community College.

The dog was one of the 88 animals removed from Mary Broderson's property on Jan. 25.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society confirmed the cocker spaniel was pregnant after caring for her for less than a week.

"After the ultrasound confirmed that the dog was pregnant, we turned over her medical care to Kirkwood," Executive Director of the Cedar Valley Humane Society Bob Citrullo said. "Kirkwood is a calmer environment for her to have puppies in, and it provides a great learning opportunity for the students."

Kirkwood professor Anne Duffy says the puppies were born on Sunday around 8 p.m.

All of the animals are reported to be well.

The puppies will remain at Kirkwood until they are at least eight weeks old and ready for adoption.
