Officials say Cedar Rapids school smell cause inconclusive

Officials in Cedar Rapids say tests to find the cause of a smell that sickened 24 students and adults in the Harding Middle School cafeteria are inconclusive.

On January 30th, students and staff sitting closest to the cafeteria complained of being ill from a foul smell. Symptoms included coughing, eye irritation, nausea, and vomiting.  About 200 students were moved out of the cafeteria and gym wings of the school. The fire department and Linn County Public Health officials were called to the school to investigate.

Checks for carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and flammable gasses showed normal. Samples taken with a hazardous materials kit showed only food products in the area. Samples sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory looking for food borne illnesses were also negative.
