Chinese vice president will visit Iowa farm

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's visit to Iowa this week will have an agricultural focus.

Speaking Monday at his weekly news conference, Gov. Terry Branstad announced Xi would tour a corn and soybean farm near Maxwell during his upcoming visit. He will also attend participate in an agricultural conference with Agriculture Secretary and former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack.

Also on the Chinese official's schedule is a dinner at the Iowa Capitol with about 650 people and a trip to Muscatine to see people he met during a 1985 trip to Iowa.

Branstad says he hopes coverage of Xi's visit by the Chinese press will prompt Chinese citizens to support economic and human rights reforms in their country.

During his trip to the United States, Xi will also meet with President Barack Obama in Washington and will travel to California.
