McDonald's requires suppliers to phase out hog crates

McDonald's announced Monday it will require its U.S. pork suppliers phase out the use of stalls that confine pregnant sows.

The joint statement was made by McDonald's Corp. and The Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society says it is a major victory in its fight to stop the use of the stalls it considers inhumane.

Some of McDonald's suppliers have already announced plans to phase out the stalls. McDonald's spokesman Dan Gorsky says suppliers including Smithfield Foods and Cargill have made progress in adopting alternatives to gestation crates.

All McDonald's suppliers will be required to provide phase out plans by May. McDonald's says it will discuss the next steps with the companies after receiving their plans.
